Excerpt from GRIM AND GHOSTLY STORIES
by Pat Hancock and Allan Gould

The fog had become a cloud, a grey misty cloud rising from the floor. Alex watched, spellbound, as the cloud swirled higher and began to branch out. The branches began to thicken.

Horrified, he realized what was happening. The cloud was taking a human shape.

Alex opened his mouth to yell, but no sound came out. He tried to make a dash for the door, but his feet felt rooted to the floor. It was as if he were caught in his worst nightmare.

The last wisps of fog settled around the shoulders of the horrible apparition, transforming into long, scraggly hair.

Alex found himself staring into a pair of milky white eyes. The spectre was wearing a long, old-fashioned coat, thick woolen pants and brown, mud-spattered boots. A thin scarf was wrapped around its neck, but its head and hands were bare.

Slowly, it stretched out its right hand. The bony fingers beckoned to Alex and the purple-tinged lips struggled to mouth a sound.

“Commmmmmme.”

Alex tried to yell. He had to warn his family. They had to get out of there.
